Ruby Red Chequer
We all face the future with a past
At 65 Jack is consumed by past guilt and regret. He is despised by his son, abused by the local kids and ignored by his neighbours. The sudden death of his wife leaves Jack lost and alone, and he spirals into decline. Hope arrives in the unlikely form of Florrie, a chubby, soft natured eight year-old, who moves in next door, delighting in his long neglected racing pigeon Ruby. Florrie unwittingly rekindles his passion for life, while forcing him to come to terms with his past. When Jack falls in love with neighbour Stephanie, a glamorous fifty something French train driver with Eurorail, who conceals a history more scandalous than his, his life finally finds new meaning. However, his newfound happiness is ended when Stephanie reveals her secret, and the nature of his friendship with Florrie is thrown into question. Jack finally cracks, consumed with sadness and humiliation, until the sudden and tragic death of Florrie forces him to confront his prejudices, face his fears and challenge those around him.
